Physicians and surgeons, nurses and students—anyone with an interest in the care of patients with advanced heart and/or lung failure—can now benefit from the most comprehensive, first-of-its-kind textbook covering all aspects of these fields. The book was co-edited by Daniel Goldstein, MD, Professor and Vice Chairman, Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, and Director of the Cardiac Transplantation and Mechanical Assistance Programs, at Montefiore Medical Center and Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and includes chapter contributions from several members of the Montefiore Einstein faculty.
The book, “Textbook of Transplantation and Mechanical Support for End-Stage Heart and Lung Disease,” was published in October by John Wiley and Sons after nearly four years of effort by Dr. Goldstein and his colleagues from other institutions.
“It was a herculean effort to gather niche experts from around the world to contribute their unique expertise into one cohesive compendium, particularly during the pandemic,” said Dr. Goldstein, who was invited in as senior editor to help define the topics covered in the text, recruit the world’s leading experts as authors, add gravitas to the endeavor, and organize the broad range of content for the project as well as to co-author several chapters.
The 1,500 page, two-volume textbook comprises three main sections: heart transplantation, lung transplantation and mechanical circulatory support. Each section provides complete, up-to-date information that cannot otherwise be found in a single source and features extensive coverage of all relevant aspects of these fields, including:
- Historical and technological advancements in heart and lung transplantation
- Transplant immunology and contemporary protocols for immune modulation and desensitization
- Mechanisms of allograft rejection, tolerance and immunosenescence
- Detailed donor and recipient surgical procedures
- Implantation techniques for all short- and long-term mechanical circulatory support (MCS) devices, including extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO)
- Complications and adverse event profiles of durable VADs, and technologies on the horizon
- Donor evaluation, risk assessment, organ allocation and prioritization
- Structure, operation and oversight of transplant organizations, databases and registries
- Regulatory and ethical considerations
Dr. Goldstein serves as national Co-principal Investigator of the MOMENTUM 3 clinical trial, the largest randomized left ventricular assist device (LVAD) study ever conducted. He is also Director of the International Registry for Mechanically Assisted Circulatory Support (IMACS), the world’s largest LVAD database.
