For more than 10 years, the Bronx Food & Farm Tour has celebrated the many bountiful gardens and farms throughout the borough. This year, Montefiore Einstein was once again proud to support the series as part of its commitment to improving health outcomes for Bronx residents. Food insecurity is a major social determinant of health, so showcasing local gardens and farms provided a perfect opportunity to encourage access to healthy eating by showing residents where and how fresh food grows and exposing them to healthier options when feeding their families.
New Roots Bronx Community Farm was the last of three stops on the 2023 tour series. Located on the Grand Concourse, the New Roots tour marked the close of the community gardening season.
During the event, which was held in conjunction with the annual New York City Department of Parks & Recreation's Hearth & Harvest Festival, guests had the opportunity to harvest the produce themselves, taking home fresh greens, herbs, honey and more. Attendees were treated to a free, healthy lunch catered by B Blossom Catering, a plant-based gourmet food company based in the Bronx and a Montefiore Einstein partner. Other entertainment included games, arts and crafts and information from local environmental organizations. Montefiore Einstein’s pandemic team was also on-site tabling with important community health information and continued COVID-19 resources.
Other sponsors of this year’s festival include New York Botanical Garden (NYBG), Bronx Green-Up/NYBG, International Rescue Committee, New Roots Bronx Community Farm and NYC Parks GreenThumb.
