Nursing Receives $300,000 Grant for New Retention Project TRAINN@ME

Montefiore Einstein Nursing has received a $300,000 grant from the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation for a newly developed TRAINN@ME program which stands for training, retaining, advancing and integrating novice nurses at Montefiore Einstein.

TRAINN@ME is a six-month residency program designed to assist in the transition to practice, improving the retention and education of new nurses and giving them advanced skills to ultimately improve patient care and help make their work less stressful.

The TRAINN@ME program will recruit and immerse recent nursing graduates in an intensive educational and clinical externship in critical areas known for high turnover, including the emergency department, critical care, neonatal intensive care units and maternal child health.

“We are grateful for the Mother Cabrini Foundation’s support in realizing this transformative project,” said Maureen Scanlan, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, Senior Vice President, Chief Nurse Executive, Montefiore Einstein. “This initiative not only addresses the immediate workforce challenges but also contributes to the long-term sustainability of quality patient care in our community.”

In recent years, many hospitals across the country have seen a developing “experience-complexity” gap as longtime nurses leave healthcare and novice nurses, with less experience, step in to offer often complex care to patients.

“The Bronx, a medically underserved area with high poverty rates, diverse demographics, a prevalence of health challenges and a shortage of healthcare professionals, has a critical need for the professional development TRAINN@ME offers to its graduates. Novice nurses graduating from the residency program will be well-equipped to close the experience-complexity gap and build a stable nursing workforce,” said Una Hopkins, DNP, RN, FNP-BC, NE-BC, FACCC, Director, Nursing Research, Montefiore Einstein and Assistant Professor, Radiation Oncology, Albert Einstein College of Medicine

Hopkins led the application process for the grant, which will go a long way toward caring for the patients in the Bronx who live with health disparities every day.

The Mother Cabrini Health Foundation, the largest foundation focused exclusively on healthcare across New York State, is dedicated to improving the health and well-being of New York’s poor, disadvantaged and underserved while also eliminating health disparities.
