Montefiore Einstein Hosts the Third Annual Adaptive Sports Expo to Mark Limb Loss Awareness Month and Showcase Living Without LIMITS

Montefiore Einstein Rehabilitation held its third annual Adaptive Sports Expo on April 15 at Williamsbridge Oval in the Bronx during Limb Loss Awareness Month as part of its efforts to help local individuals, their caregivers and families live without limits.

The expo offered many fun activities, including wheelchair basketball, adaptive boxing, yoga, tennis, Zumba and more, and it gave those living with limb loss and limb difference an opportunity to show off their skills to friends, family and the public.

Other limb loss awareness opportunities during April included a lecture series with topics such as amputee athletes and preserving damaged limbs during Grand Rounds, where the medical problems and treatment of a patient are presented to the hospital system’s doctors, pharmacists, residents and medical students.

Montefiore Einstein is committed to raising awareness about the risk factors, prevention and available support for limb loss and limb difference as well as caring for and improving the lives of amputees and their families, an often-underserved community. Montefiore Einstein Rehabilitation’s support for those living with limb loss extends through the entire year. We offer support groups to build community and connections and to give people a greater ability to cope with depression, fear and feelings of hopelessness; more successful rehabilitation outcomes; a faster return to the activities of daily living and increased social interaction.

Montefiore Einstein also offers the PALS Program, an eight-lesson, online series designed to develop skills to improve the quality of life for people who have lost a limb. The course covers topics such as self-management, managing emotions, being healthy, building the life you want and managing setbacks.
