The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM) was recognized for excellence in individual and program leadership at this year’s Pediatric Academic Societies (PAS) conference, a prestigious annual meeting representing three leading national pediatric organizations and drawing thousands of physician-scientists, clinicians and educators to share research, explore new ideas and collaborate on projects to advance children’s health around the world.
"This year CHAM took home 25% of the highly prestigious annual awards bestowed by the Pediatric Academic Societies at their annual meeting, an astonishing achievement for a single institution," said Andrew Racine, MD, PhD, System Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer, and Executive Director, Montefiore Medical Group. "I am so very proud of my colleagues and echo the recognition they receive for their outstanding work every day in service to our patients and our community."
Michael D. Cabana, MD, MPH, Physician-in-Chief, Children’s Hospital at Montefiore, Professor, Pediatrics, and the Michael I. Cohen, MD, University Chair, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, received the Academic Pediatric Association’s (APA’s) prestigious Miller-Sarkin Mentoring Award in Research. The award recognizes outstanding mentorship to learners and colleagues locally and nationally as well as success and advancement in research. Ten fellows and junior faculty mentored by Dr. Cabana have gone on to receive National Institutes of Health (NIH) career development awards and independent research funding. Dr. Cabana’s own research focuses on improving physician diagnosis and on the prevention and management of common childhood conditions.
CHAM’s Leadership, Engagement and Diversity in Education and Residency (LEADER) Program earned the APA Teaching Program Award for excellence in educational methods and the teaching of general pediatrics. Suzette O. Oyeku, MD, MPH, Chief, Academic General Pediatrics, Director, Academic General Pediatrics Fellowship, Children’s Hospital at Montefiore, and Professor, Pediatrics, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, accepted the award on the program’s behalf.
Montefiore Einstein’s Terra Firma program, a vital resource to provide healthcare and justice for immigrant and asylum-seeking children and families, was awarded the APA’s Health Care Delivery Award for innovative and effective programs involving residents, fellows and/or medical students in a teaching setting. Alan J. Shapiro, MD, Pediatrics, Co-Founder and Executive Director, Terra Firma National, Attending Physician, Bronx Health Collective/Academic General Pediatrics, Children’s Hospital at Montefiore, and Assistant Professor, Pediatrics, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, accepted the award.
This year, 70 CHAM doctors gave presentations highlighting the range of our expertise, from identifying developmental disabilities, to treating intraventricular hemorrhage, to screening for adolescent depression, to organ transplantation, to safe sleep education, to quality improvement.
Elaine E. Schulte, MD, MPH, Vice Chair, Academic Affairs and Faculty Development, Medical Director, Adoption Program, Children’s Hospital at Montefiore, and Professor, Pediatrics, Albert Einstein College of Medicine led a workshop titled, “Finding Your Authentic Voice as a Leader: Using Empowering Questions to Connect with Colleagues.”
Michael L. Rinke, MD, PhD, Director, Dissemination and Implementation Science, Attending Physician, Pediatric Hospital Medicine, Children’s Hospital at Montefiore, Vice President and Chief Quality Officer, Montefiore Medical Center, and Professor, Pediatrics, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, co-chaired the APA’s 12th Annual Conference on Advancing Quality Improvement Science for Children’s Health.
During the PAS conference, Kerry A. Morrone, MD, Director, Sickle Cell Program, Montefiore Einstein and Assistant Professor, Pediatric Hematology-Oncology, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, presented an oral abstract, “Prevent Acute Chest Syndrome checklist (PACScheck): Utilizing a Best Practices Checklist to Reduce Morbidity in Pediatric Sickle Cell Disease.”
The PAS conference, which took place April 27 to May 1, in Washington, DC, is a partnership of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the Academic Pediatric Association, the American Pediatric Society (APS) and the Society for Pediatric Research (SPR).
