A Nationwide Leader in Treating Cough, Montefiore Cough Center Marks 20 Years of Care and Research

Montefiore Cough Center is marking its 20th anniversary as a national leader in the research and treatment of chronic cough, one of the most common and yet overlooked ailments in the United States.

The center is a leader in cough research and the only one of its kind in New York State, and one of a few nationwide to offer health services exclusively for chronic cough.

“Inadequately treated cough can persist for years, even decades, and have a devastating effect not only on the life of the suffering patient, but on family members and coworkers as well,” Peter Dicpinigaitis, MD, Founder and Director, Montefiore Cough Center, Attending Physician, Division of Critical Care, Montefiore Einstein, and Professor, Medicine (Critical Care), Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

Dr. Dicpinigaitis established the cough center in 2003 to provide expert care to people suffering with cough, including the two most common types: chronic cough, a cough lasting more than eight weeks, and refractory chronic cough (RCC), a cough that has not responded to therapy.

The cough center provides extensive evaluation and management of cough, including a physical exam for every patient and X-rays, computerized axial tomography (CAT) scans and other tests, as needed, for an accurate diagnosis.

The center focuses on looking for the three causes of chronic cough that make up 90% of all cases: postnasal drip, asthma and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD, or acid reflux). With the help of cough center expertise, patients often report a remarkable recovery, sometimes within the first week or two of treatment.

Montefiore Cough Center is also leading clinical research in the field to improve the understanding of mechanisms and causes of chronic cough and to create new treatments.
