Free Cancer Screenings in Yonkers with a Revolutionary, Radiation-Free Breast Imaging Device

Clinicians from Montefiore Einstein are using a revolutionary new device to provide free, painless breast cancer screenings at the Yonkers Public Library.

The hand-held device, called iBreastExam, is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for breast lesion documentation. Healthcare workers can use it outside of the mammography suite as a supplement to clinical breast exam to detect small breast masses. While the device is not a replacement for mammograms or ultrasounds, it gives healthcare workers an important tool for doing initial screenings in convenient settings.

iBreastExam is very simple. With these small devices, we can go into any community where there's interest and provide screenings,” said Sheldon Feldman, MD, Chief, Division of Breast Surgery & Breast Surgical Oncology, Director of Breast Cancer Services and Professor, Department of Surgery, Montefiore Einstein. “It's just like a physical exam where the doctor touches the breast, so there's no pain or discomfort. It gives everyone a head start on finding disease earlier.

Screening events take place every other Saturday through September and are run in partnership with the Rotary Club of The Hudson Valley.

If the screening reveals a health issue, Montefiore Einstein has an infrastructure in place to help patients get access to a mammogram, ultrasound and, if needed, biopsy to diagnose any illness. The Bronx Oncology Living Daily (BOLD) Program, directed by Alyson B. Moadel-Robblee, PhD, Founding Director of the BOLD Cancer Wellness Program, Associate Director of Community Outreach & Engagement, Montefiore Einstein Cancer Center and Professor, Department of Epidemiology and Population Health, has a team of navigators who help patients get funding and access to care.

Patients who are insured, uninsured, underinsured or undocumented are welcome to the screenings. "If they don't have insurance or if they need to get emergency Medicaid, we'll help them figure it out,” said Dr. Feldman.

To register and schedule an exam, visit rotaryhudsonvalley.org, or simply show up at the Yonkers Public Library, 1 Larkin Center, Yonkers, NY, Saturdays from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, July 23, August 6 and 20, and September 10 and 24.
