Montefiore Einstein’s deep commitment to treating all populations with diabetes and prediabetes extends to raising awareness of this chronic disease and supporting prevention and better disease management. We proudly joined the American Diabetes Association in November to host a series of more than 30 events designed to educate and support diabetics of all ages as part of American Diabetes Month.
Raising Awareness of Diabetes with Education, Support and Screenings

Our hope is to get everyone involved, including healthcare workers and family members. When it comes to preventing and managing diabetes, we’re stronger together.
Most events, which focused on lowering the risks associated with diabetes by educating participants about diet, exercise and treatment options, were open to the entire community. The series kicked off on October 26 with free blood screenings at Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield in the Bronx. Other events included educational talks on diabetes nutrition, a panel discussion on managing the disease and an educational workshop for elementary-school parents.
“Diabetes & You” educational workshops were held at several senior housing developments to help residents understand how best to control diabetes. Associates were invited to talks that provided tips on helping patients manage diabetes.
For patients, activities included a candy exchange so diabetic children could trade in their Halloween candy for toys or gift cards.
“Education is incredibly important,” said Hanna J. Lee, MD, Associate Professor, Endocrinology, and Attending Physician, Fleischer Institute for Diabetes and Metabolism, Montefiore Einstein, who organized the events, along with Edwin A. Torres, PhD, RN, CHNP, FNP-C, Community Health Nurse Practitioner, Fleischer Institute for Diabetes and Metabolism, Montefiore Einstein. “It’s been shown that when people with diabetes learn how to self-manage, there are actually better outcomes, so education is a key part of managing diabetes.”
Montefiore Einstein is nationally ranked for its diabetes management program by U.S. News & World Report. Its multidisciplinary team of experienced endocrinologists, nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists and nutritionists provide diabetes treatment and support to 4,000 individuals annually in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
